The Bridal Shower began as a custom a long, long
time ago when a father didn't approve of his daughter's marriage and he
refused to provide a dowry (A dowry is a gift of money
or valuables given by the bride's family to that of the groom to permit their
marriage.) The shower became an alternative. Supportive villagers would
get together and provide the bride with a variety of household items for her
new home. Gift giving dates from the 1890's.
